Bodies and Brush Strokes is an evening length work with two acts and a gallery showing preceding the performance. Our gallery showing at 6pm will feature art works made during our figure drawing for beginners community class series. Participants will be able to show their work in an informal gallery setting featuring original artworks of the performers in the show.

Act 1 features the John Singer Sargent Series, a collection of solos and duets inspired by the portraits of 19th century painter John Singer Sargent. Dancers portray the subjects of some of his most notable works including “Lady Agnew of Lochnaw”, “El Jaleo”, “Lady Macbeth” and “Madame X”. This piece features five performers and runs approximately 30 minutes.

Act 2 features “But What Am I?” a work that has been in development during two different residencies at CDE over the past two years. “But What Am I?” incorporates dance film, live dance, set design, drag performance and theatrical text; following the journey of 6 young adults discovering their queer identity. Inspired by surrealist photography and film, “But What Am I?” takes audiences through a rabbit holes journey into the inter world of the dancers and their lived experience. The run time of this piece is approximately 45 minutes long.

Estimated Run Time: 2 hours with one 15-minute intermission
