Tongue of a Bird
Tongue of a Bird

Show Information
In Tongue of a Bird by Ellen McLaughlin, Maxine is a search and rescue pilot who returns to her childhood home in the unforgiving Adirondack Mountains to lead the search for Charlotte, a young girl abducted by a stranger while on a school field trip. Maxine is uniquely skilled at spotting the unseen, but this mission takes a massive psychological toll as she wrestles with her own demons. During the three-day search, Maxine stays at her childhood home.
Between the present-day search and Maxine’s fragmented, haunting memories, Maxine is forced to confront her own traumatic past, the heavy burden of motherhood, and the ghosts of her abandoned childhood. Seemingly part ghost story and part search for self, the story becomes a profound meditation on the cycles of trauma, the complexities of motherhood, and the desperate yearning for emotional release.
The circumstances around the search force Maxine to process the abandonment and the tragic events surrounding her mother’s death and ultimately, heal herself and find closure in the relationships around her.
